Commission approves budget calendar, staff to hold May town hall for community input

The Sarasota City Commission on Jan. 21 approved the city—s fiscal-year budget calendar and confirmed a community town-hall-style budget session for May 6, 2025, with staff saying the event is intended as an educational session about the budget process.
Kelly Strickland, director of financial administration, told commissioners the May session would be an optional public workshop to explain the budget process, show capital projects and answer questions. Strickland said the workshop would not include final budget numbers at that time but would present where the city stood and what major capital issues might surface.
Commissioners pressed staff for more opportunities for substantive public input earlier in the budget cycle. Commissioner Ahern Kutch said residents want to know where priorities lie so they can offer targeted feedback. Vice Mayor Trice suggested the town hall emphasize priorities rather than raw numbers to invite early public engagement. Several commissioners asked staff to consider whether the published budget could be available earlier or whether an intermediate public comment period could be added between publication and the multi-day budget workshops.
Commissioner Batty moved to approve the budget calendar (item 6.3); Vice Mayor Trice seconded and the motion passed unanimously.
