Commission approves contract authority for targeted sanitary sewer repairs

The City Commission on Jan. 21 approved a consent-item contract for targeted point repairs to the city—s sanitary sewer collection system aimed at reducing inflow and infiltration, an issue highlighted during recent storm events.
Utility director Vern Hall and utilities general manager Scott Woodard told commissioners the work focuses on small-scale fixes such as point repairs for localized pipeline defects, depressions near manholes and short pipe sections that allow sand and stormwater to enter the system. Hall said the program is intended to complement larger capital projects such as the Osprey Force Main by addressing small but persistent sources of infiltration.
"This item is another weapon in our toolbox for maintaining and upgrading the collection system," Hall said. Commissioner Ulrich had pulled the item from consent to ask whether the repairs would reduce intrusions that occurred during the last hurricane season; Hall said they would help on a smaller scale while the larger force main and other capital projects address systemic issues.
The commission approved the consent item unanimously.
