Dr. Trent Kaufman and Dr. Carrie Miller described results from the Assessment to Achievement project and requested one-time funds to expand the program into a new cohort of schools.
Kaufman said a 2020 appropriation funded a cohort of 14 schools classified as "targeted support and improvement" (TSI) schools to receive focused supports and coaching. After three school years, each participating school recorded sizable gains in the percentage of English learner (EL) students achieving proficiency on the state end-of-year exam; Kaufman said each of the 14 schools improved proficiency among their EL populations, with several reporting double-digit percentage-point gains.
Nut graf: Presenters argued that the program's combination of data-driven coaching, targeted instructional strategies and school leadership support produced consistent gains across diverse schools, and they asked lawmakers for one-time funding to create a new cohort of participating schools. MGT, the consultants supporting the project, said the model is replicable and cost-effective compared with more expensive turnaround interventions.
Committee members had no immediate follow-up; presenters offered to provide more detailed program budgets and evaluation metrics on request.
Ending: The presenters thanked the committee and asked for funding consideration to stand up an additional cohort; no appropriation was adopted during the session.
