The California Transportation Commission unanimously elected Commissioner Oleg Grisby as its new chair and Commissioner Falcone as vice chair on Jan. 30 during the first day of the commission’s two-day meeting in Sacramento.
The nomination was offered by a commissioner attending remotely and seconded on the dais; the commission voted by voice and the motion passed unanimously. The election takes effect at the commission’s transition scheduled for the March meeting.
The nomination drew endorsements during the meeting’s public comment period. Sofia of the Coalition for Clean Air praised Grisby’s record, saying his “leadership and ability to ask just the right questions” helped the commission “make informed decisions” on equity, safety and sustainability. Jamie Pugh of NextGen California also voiced support, calling Grisby and Falcone “a great ticket to lead the CTC into the future.”
Outgoing Chair Richard Gardino reflected on his year of service and said the rotation of leadership was planned when he accepted the chairmanship. Grisby, in his first remarks as chair-elect, said he was “humbled” and emphasized partnership and “servant leadership” as priorities for the commission going forward.
The commission will formally install the new leadership as part of its March meeting transition.
Votes at the Jan. 30 meeting related to leadership were taken by roll call or voice as noted in the meeting record.
