Mayor says city applied for larger CCMG grant to advance Main Street reconstruction

During an update, the mayor and a deputy mayor reported that Madison City applied for an enlarged CCMG (County Community Crossroads Matching Grant) to support a major segment of Main Street reconstruction.
The deputy mayor said the city applied for $3,000,000 (the city was eligible to request up to $1.5 million more than prior rounds) and that the mayor secured bonding to provide the local match. The proposed work covers Main Street from Mill to Broadway and is intended to complement earlier and planned phases: Phase 1 (top of the hill to incline bridge), Phase 2 (inclined bridge to Mill) and the proposed Phase 3 (Mill to Broadway). The deputy mayor told the board staff hope to be under contract by about June 1 and that construction would proceed during the summer.
The deputy mayor said the application bundles that CCMG work with two safety grants that fund traffic calming and intersection improvements (Main & Mulberry and Main & West), signal upgrades and improved crosswalks. "This will be our largest CCMG project; it is part of the Main Street master plan that we had been working on since 2020 or 2021," the deputy mayor said.
Staff said they focused CCMG resources on Main Street for the first round of funding and that the reconstruction program is expected to continue with projects in 2026 and 2027 to address roughly 75% of the corridor over successive phases.
