Elizabethtown Area School District approves two student-record and athletics policies after heated public comment; implementation delayed to March 1

The Elizabethtown Area School District board voted on Jan. 28 to approve two policies addressing how the district records students’ chosen names and pronouns (Policy 216.2) and how athletic teams are designated by sex (Policy 123.3). The board set a March 1 implementation date to give administration time to prepare procedures, train staff and notify families.

The votes followed a long public-comment period in which dozens of residents, students, parents and staff addressed the board. Speakers opposed and supported the policies in roughly equal measure; several students and families said the measures would harm transgender and nonbinary students, while some speakers framed the athletics policy as needed to protect girls’ opportunities and safety.

“There are students and parents who feel that these policies are making them vulnerable to ridicule, misunderstanding, and physical harm,” parent Jessica Hughes told the board during public comment. “All students have the right to feel safe, supported and accepted at school.”
