Logansport council moves to rename, update ownership and seek historic recognition for Cass County Memorial Center

The Logansport Common Council voted Monday to expedite changes to the Cass County Memorial Center’s official name, ownership listing and historic registration, a move council members said could open the site to grant funding.
Councilman Cameron Austin presented Ordinance 2025-O-4, asking the council to suspend the usual rules and approve three changes to the building’s registration. Austin said the process would take about two months and that the council was seeking (1) a name change from “Cass County Memorial Home” to “Logansport Cass County Memorial Center,” (2) an update removing the listing of the county as the owner in the registration, and (3) a change from a local designation to state historic recognition.
Austin said state recognition is likely because of the building’s World War I dedication and that securing that designation would “open up several grant opportunities in the near future,” adding that timing for some grants made the expedited vote necessary. He formally moved to suspend the rules; another council member seconded the motion.
The council voted to suspend the rules and then approved Ordinance 2025-O-4. The suspension and the ordinance passed on recorded voice/roll-call votes taken during the meeting.
The ordinance will allow staff to submit an updated application for state-level historic recognition and to change the facility name and ownership information on that registration. Council members and staff said the change aims to position the site to pursue grants tied to historic properties; no specific grant awards were described at the meeting.
The action follows a finance committee discussion, referenced earlier in the meeting, that listed the registration update among items for possible ARP or other funding to support a national historic registration update for the Cass Memorial Center.
Council members did not specify an exact grant or funding amount at the meeting. The motion and subsequent final vote were recorded as passed by the council.
