Commissioners approve sewer-district MOU and broadband support letters, table fire-district appointment; recycling center construction contract noted

Morgan County commissioners approved a memorandum of understanding for the Morgan County Regional Sewer District, voted to send letters of support to broadband applicants, tabled an appointment to the Harrison Township Fire District and granted a request for use of the large meeting room.

At the meeting the board voted 3-0 to approve the MOU for the regional sewer district after members who had reviewed the draft said concerns were addressed and changes had been made before returning the document to partner bodies for final review. The motion to approve the MOU carried by voice vote.

The board also voted to provide support letters for broadband projects submitted to the Indiana Broadband Office, including requests from Comcast and local SCI REMC. Commissioners characterized those votes as routine support for county broadband expansion and approved the letters by voice vote (motion carried 3-0).

An appointment to the Harrison Township Fire District was tabled until the next meeting while the board awaits a resignation letter and additional paperwork; the motion to table carried 3-0.

Commissioners approved a request from Secoa to use the county's large meeting room (vote 3-0).

In response to a public question about the county recycling center, county staff said the board awarded a construction contract in December for a recycling/EMS location on land the county purchased near Sinterton and that the facility is expected to open later this year. Staff said the site will be staffed during regular hours, will be monitored by camera, and county rules will limit items that contaminate recycling (for example, mattresses and televisions will not be accepted). The board recorded no additional votes on that update at the meeting.

Public comment: Chase Harker addressed the board with a proposal of privately owned land near Morgan Street as a potential relocation site for the transportation department's salt barn and related facilities; he said the parcel (approximately 2.79 acres) was listed for about $59,000 and offered to buy back a corner of the parcel so the county could use it. County staff said they would review the property title and easements before taking further action.
