Board hears updates on security radios, PA-system quotes and failing generator; new director to start Feb. 3

Weston’s safety and security committee reported Tuesday on several facilities and security items, including radio-system upgrades, PA-system quotes, an aging generator and the arrival of a new director of security.
Committee members said classroom door auto-locks at Weston Intermediate School are installed and that the district is rolling out a quick-alert system and continuing cybersecurity follow-up after a recent incident. Facilities staff are collecting vendor quotes for PA-system replacements, which the board noted are safety-related and should be available before the district’s Thursday public forum, if possible.
Operations staff told the board that a 2006 vintage emergency generator at Weston Intermediate has reached the end of its useful life and needs replacement. The generator replacement cost has been treated as a placeholder in the capital plan while vendors complete site assessments and design work. Committee members said answers from vendors have been slow but that site assessments have been completed to customize proposals for the district’s needs.
The board also heard that the district’s radios will be upgraded to improve range and interoperability with first responders; the SROs use police-issued radios, but the district’s radios will be modernized in line with a tower upgrade. The committee said whether the town or the district bears particular costs will be discussed further.
The safety and security committee announced that the district’s new director of security, Jim (last name not stated), is scheduled to begin on Feb. 3. The committee plans community meetings later in February to introduce the new director and gather stakeholder input.
