Township authorizes Broughton Road survey and hires planner for Town Center overlay

Macomb Township — The Macomb Township Board of Trustees on Jan. 22 authorized the engineering department to begin right‑of‑way surveying for the Broughton Road Extension and approved a planning contract to create a Town Center overlay district.

The board approved professional services for a topographic survey and right‑of‑way parcel exhibits for the Broughton Road Extension (23½ Mile Road to 25 Mile Road) in the amount of $64,600. Engineering staff said the survey is the first phase of design work; right‑of‑way acquisitions and additional design phases will return to the board for approval.

Engineering presenter Ms. Kozak told trustees the work is needed to keep the project moving and that additional design phases will be requested at a subsequent meeting. Supervisor Frank Viviano added the project stems from a $5 million award secured by state Sen. Kleinfeld to extend Broughton another half‑mile; the township is coordinating with county road engineers and nearby developers on the detailed design.

Separately the board approved a $17,124 contract with the planning consultant Carlisle Wortman to develop a Town Center overlay district. Planning consultant Mr. Box said the overlay will work alongside zoning to provide more detailed standards for building placement, parking, and pedestrian orientation so development around the extended roadway matches the township’s Town Center vision.

Both motions passed unanimously. The survey authorization was moved as recorded by Trustee Lucido and supported by Trustee Oliver; the overlay contract motion was moved and supported as recorded in the meeting packet.

Ending: Engineering staff said right‑of‑way work will allow the township to advance design and property‑acquisition steps; planning staff said the overlay will guide development once the road extension proceeds.
