BRIGHTON, Mich. — The Brighton City Council discussed appointing an alternate member to the Brighton Area Fire Authority (BAFA) at its Jan. 28 meeting and asked staff to bring the matter back for a formal vote on Feb. 11.
City Manager Gamolka told council that BAFA’s updated bylaws allow each participating municipality — Brighton Township, Genoa Township and the City of Brighton — to appoint an alternate member. The alternate would be appointed by the municipality and sworn in by its clerk, and the alternate’s term would follow the regular five‑year schedule for BAFA appointees.
Gamolka said the alternate member would be paid only when called in to fill for an absent regular member; attendance in the audience would not be paid. He also said BAFA meetings are scheduled on the second Thursday of each month at 8 a.m., normally at Brighton Fire Station 31 on Grand River unless otherwise noted.
Council members asked clarifying questions about current terms and meeting rotation. Manager Gamolka confirmed that current officer terms expire Dec. 31, 2025, and that alternates appointed this year would have terms aligned to that schedule. Council agreed to add the item to the Feb. 11 agenda for consideration and possible appointment.
