GROSSE ILE, Mich. — The Grosse Ile Township Board of Trustees unanimously approved a special land use request on Jan. 27 to allow an equipment, truck and trailer rental facility with outdoor storage at 10 Grove Road, adjacent to Island Paradise.
The planning commission held a public hearing and unanimously recommended approval to the township board. Board members said the use is compatible with nearby commercial activity and could reduce off-island trips by providing a local moving-truck option.
The application triggered special-land-use review because the proposed outdoor storage of equipment is not a by-right use under the applicable zoning provisions. The planning presentation cited “Section 9.3(a)” as listing equipment rental as a by-right use in the A-1 district but noted that outdoor storage requires the special-land-use process under “Article 22.3.”
A trustee who represents the Macomb Street corridor said, “A U-Haul service here would actually be a needed service provided here on the island,” and another trustee noted the proposal sits near an existing storage facility and fits the commercial pattern on that stretch of road.
The board approved the special land use without recorded dissent.
Why it matters: The approval allows on-island equipment and trailer rentals — including a U-Haul franchise-style operation — to operate with outdoor storage at the site, which planning staff and commissioners reviewed for compatibility and conditions.
What’s next: The applicant will complete any required building- and zoning-permit steps and comply with any conditions the planning commission attached during its recommendation.
