DDA considers donated ice-rink boards for a small Macomb Street rink

Ross said the Recreation Department is removing boards from the Waters Edge recreation site because the existing surface lacks built-in refrigeration; the department plans to repurpose the footprint for summer uses such as pickleball courts. "They were asking if we'd be interested in kind of receiving their donation of the ice rink boards," Ross said.
Board members expressed interest in a smaller rink that could fit a park footprint and in the potential for year-round, convertible courts (for example, a basketball court that converts to an ice surface in winter). Several members cautioned about maintenance, assembly and teardown burdens and about the DDA committing operating funds for ongoing upkeep. One board member said the idea would be feasible if the Recreation Department would manage setup, takedown and maintenance.
No formal motion was made. Staff were directed to continue conversations with Recreation Department staff to clarify the proposal, maintenance responsibilities and the footprint that would be required for any rink or convertible court.
