Humboldt County on Jan. 28 accepted a follow-up diversity, equity and inclusion assessment conducted by an external consultant and presented by the county's DEI manager.
Consultant Isaac Carter summarized the 2024 reassessment, saying the county had made measurable improvements since the prior review: higher awareness of DEI policies, stronger supervisory support for DEI-related matters, and positive cultural shifts tied to training and affinity groups. Carter cautioned that improvement is not the same as completion and recommended the board define achievement thresholds and continue investment in leadership accountability, professional development and retention pathways.
DEI manager Dr. Jeremy Michael Clark and staff outlined practical next steps: executive coaching, improved measurement of retention and promotion by demographic groups, expanded professional development (including a Supervisor Academy and certification in intercultural competence), and continued support for employee affinity groups. Staff said many initiatives are underway and cited a staff comment that affinity groups had measurably improved an individual's workplace experience.
The board voted unanimously to accept and file the assessment and thanked staff and the consultant. Supervisors said they want continued monitoring of outcomes and further pursuit of staff development and retention measures.
