The Terrebonne Parish Council on Jan. 15 approved a resolution permitting Recreation District No. 11 to call an election on May 3, 2025 to ask district voters to renew an ad valorem tax.
The measure passed unanimously (9 ayes) after a brief presentation by Pat Patterson, who identified himself as the district manager. Patterson told the council this is his “third go‑around” serving the district and said the tax renewal would fund reconstruction efforts at Williams Avenue Park, where ball fields and related facilities were damaged by Hurricane Ida. Patterson said the district is obtaining bids and expects the tax renewal to provide monies for rebuilding the Babe Ruth park, Dixie Field and adjacent football field and walking track.
“All we're trying to do right now is getting stuff fixed that was destroyed by Hurricane Ida,” Patterson told the council, noting FEMA claims are part of the funding picture and that the district is “waiting on funding” for some of the work. Council members asked clarifying questions about which fields are included; Patterson confirmed the Babe Ruth field, Dixie field and the football field next to the gym were intended to be repaired.
The resolution was moved by Councilwoman Kim Chauvin and seconded by Councilman Pleasure; the clerk recorded nine ayes and the motion passed. The council did not change the election date during the meeting.
The council’s approval allows the district to proceed with election preparations and with seeking the funds needed to move forward on the park reconstruction project.
