The City Commission on Tuesday approved the 95% design package for the Henderson community gym, advancing the project from detailed design toward procurement and construction planning.
Melissa Crosby, the architect working on Henderson, and project lead (presenting as Miss Crosby and Mr. Bell in the record) reviewed the 95% drawings, which show retractable five‑row bleachers on the north, south and west sides of the gym and bench seating along the east wall to keep spectator circulation off the playing court. Crosby said the design relocates striping and court layout by only a few inches to maximize space for the retractable bleachers.
Commissioners and staff discussed project scope, schedule and budget. City staff and the city manager noted that the 95% design gives a clearer construction estimate and that some elements in the plan may exceed the current project budget; they said preferences and value‑engineering choices will be needed before contract award. Commissioners asked for recognition of local leaders in the facility’s naming or with a plaque; staff said that would be handled outside the design approval process.
After questions and a brief discussion about start dates and funding, the commission voted to approve the 95% design package by roll call. Commissioners asked staff to return with procurement and a refined cost estimate for future decisions on construction timing and scope.
The approved drawings include retractable bleachers on three sides, a bench area on the fourth side, and a footprint that accepts several manufacturers’ retractable systems. Staff noted that selecting a manufacturer and final seating configuration will be part of the construction procurement.
Commissioners also discussed memorial recognition and asked staff to prepare language and location options for a plaque acknowledging a local community leader; the commission did not select a formal name at Tuesday’s meeting.
