Forest Service briefs commission on Northwest Forest Plan amendment comment period, cancels national old‑growth initiative

A Forest Service representative told the Columbia River Gorge Commission that the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment draft environmental impact statement is out for public comment and the agency has set an in‑person meeting Feb. 13 at the Stevenson Library.
Nicholas Granlund of the Forest Service said the draft EIS is available for a 120‑day comment period, with comments due in mid‑March; the Feb. 13 meeting in Stevenson is intended to allow the public to hear changes in the draft EIS and provide input in person. “For those of you interested in traditional forest management, we had two efforts in the works. One is the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment, and that is currently out for a comment period… There will be a public meeting in person on February 13th at the Stevenson Library,” Granlund said.
Granlund also said the National Old Growth Amendment effort has been rescinded by the chief and is no longer moving forward. Separately, he said Donna Mickley will return to her role next week after performing regional duties elsewhere and thanked commission staff for close staff‑to‑staff collaboration.
Ending: The commission was advised of the Feb. 13 public meeting and the 120‑day comment period for the Northwest Forest Plan Amendment; staff and commissioners were encouraged to direct interested residents to the Forest Service comment process.
