The Broken Arrow City Council approved a request Wednesday to declare a 2007 Kubota mini‑excavator surplus and transfer ownership to the city of Nowata, whose municipal barn burned earlier this month and destroyed vehicles and equipment.
City staff said the excavator had been in service since 2007 in utilities and was replaced; staff recommended surplus and transfer rather than sale. Nowata councilor Dean Bridges described the Jan. 13 blaze that destroyed the city barn, vehicles and parts, and thanked Broken Arrow for the offer. “We cannot tell you in words how much we appreciate this,” Bridges said when council members discussed giving the machine to Nowata.
Broken Arrow staff said the transfer includes a modest, informal reciprocal arrangement in which Nowata will provide labor assistance to Broken Arrow utilities at a later date. The council voted to approve the surplus declaration and the transfer by roll call; staff indicated the excavator is operational and can be moved to Nowata on short notice.
Council members spoke in favor, noting past regional cooperation and urging a small presentation or photo when the transfer occurs. The action was handled as a council item after the municipal authority approved the underlying consent action earlier in the meeting.
