Housing Authority of Savannah introduces new executive director, Yvette Hester

The Housing Authority of Savannah’s board chair, Dr. Anne LaVette (identified at the meeting as chair of the board), introduced Yvette Hester to the City Council on Jan. 9 as the authority’s new executive director. Hester told council she brings more than 30 years of experience in housing, including roughly 19 years as an executive director of public housing authorities elsewhere, and that her priorities for Savannah include: 1) preservation of affordable housing, 2) expansion of affordable housing opportunities, and 3) services for residents to support economic mobility.
Council members welcomed Hester and said they would work with the housing authority on preservation and growth of affordable housing. Hester said she planned to meet individually with council members and community leaders as part of a “boots on the ground” approach and asked for council and public support for preservation and resident services.
No formal council vote was required for the introduction; the event served as an informational welcome and public affirmation of the housing authority’s leadership transition.
