Middletown High receives Toshiba grant to buy veterinary training mannequins

Middletown — Students and teachers from Middletown High School presented a recently awarded Toshiba America Foundation grant during the school board meeting on Jan. 14, saying the $4,950 award will buy two advanced veterinary training mannequins.
Caitlin Cogshaw, a senior at Middletown High School, told the board the grant — $4,950, "$10 shy of the maximum amount" the Toshiba America Foundation awards — will allow the animal science program to purchase two mannequins named Critical Care Jerry (canine) and Critical Care Fluffy (feline). The mannequins offer features used in veterinary-technology training: working lungs, an artificial pulse, airway management and tools for CPR practice; the feline model also supports venipuncture practice.
Cogshaw said the mannequins will support the district's college‑credit animal science courses (including Middletown Community College vet courses) and certification opportunities through industry partners such as Elanco Animal Health. The students plan to pursue a RECOVER Initiative veterinary resuscitation certification in spring 2025 with local veterinary partners and district staff support.
Teachers Amanda Thompson and Rebecca Isaacson and students said the mannequins will be used for classroom instruction, preparation for FFA Veterinary Science competitions, and community outreach events including the district's 8th‑grade open house and an April 30 ag open house. The program will also use the mannequins for summer STEAM camps.
The board applauded the students and teachers for securing the grant and for using the equipment to strengthen career‑connected learning opportunities in Middletown.
"This grant will strongly support our advanced veterinary science curriculum," Cogshaw said when presenting the award to the board.
