Norwalk coaches pilot classroom 'chatbots,' Digital Promise partnership to frame AI training

Norwalk School District staff and board members on Feb. 21 described pilot uses of artificial intelligence tools to support teachers, curriculum planning and district operations and said they plan to buy closed systems that keep local data from leaving the district.
District officials said the technology is being used as a planning partner for lesson design, a coaching aid for teacher development and a resource that can surface district-approved instructional materials. The presentations highlighted three kinds of chatbots created this year: a curriculum-focused GPT for social studies, a math-algebra planning bot and coaching bots trained on explicit coaching texts.
"We're keeping artificial intelligence top of mind," said Doctor Alexander Strayer, who opened the workshop's first triad and framed the district's Portrait of a Graduate work in the context of AI. Dan Bridal, the district's digital learning coach at Norwalk High School, demonstrated a chatbot he trained with the district's curriculum and depth-of-knowledge frameworks. "It spit out an amazing lesson plan," Bridal said, adding that teachers must still adapt AI output: "we would never tell a teacher, just print out this lesson plan... it's going to require a lot more tweaking and customizing." Maria Norton, an elementary instructional coach, showed a bot built on the Poe.com platform and stressed provenance: the tool returns footnoted excerpts and links back to the district materials uploaded as the knowledge base. "If you click on that, it'll take you to the section of the knowledge base that it got that information from," Norton said, describing how coaches can configure bots to ask clarifying questions and encourage teacher reflection.
Presenters said the district is deliberately using closed or "walled" implementations to reduce hallucinations and to keep student and staff data from being absorbed by commercial models. "To reduce hallucinations, you create bots and control the information," one coach said. Staff said the district intends to budget for licensed, education-focused tools next year and is piloting operational bots for human resources, where employees can test queries in a restricted environment.
Digital Promise is a named partner in the work; district speakers described it as a source of professional learning and access to national practice. Presenters said teacher response has been positive: coaches and some teachers report faster planning, differentiated lesson ideas and translation support. They emphasized an "80/20" model in which AI provides a draft or suggestions and human educators supply oversight and adaptation.
Board members and staff discussed follow-up learning sessions. The district offered to arrange hands-on demonstrations and training for board members and said the coach network will continue to develop curriculum-specific chatbots and teacher-facing tools.
The meeting closed with a brief operational note that an HR bot pilot is in a restricted testing phase; staff said the pilot will collect user queries to refine accuracy before broader rollout.
