Trimester 1 attendance mixed: small increases in middle school, slight dip at high school level
Summary
District 196 reported trimester 1 attendance data showing a modest increase in middle school consistent attendance (86.7%) and a slight decrease at the high school level (82.8%). Elementary consistent attendance is near 90%.
District staff presented trimester 1 attendance data to the Rosemount-Apple Valley-Eagan School Board on Jan. 13, showing small changes compared with the prior year and outlining school-level interventions.
Director Eric Hanson and Jeremy Sorensen said the Minnesota Department of Education defines consistent attendance as attending more than 90% of school days. For trimester 1 this school year, administrators reported:
- Elementary: about 90% consistent attendance (up approximately 2 percentage points from prior year) with most elementary schools within one point of the district average; two schools were outliers at about 93% and about 86—9%. - Middle school: 86.7% consistent attendance (up from 85.6% the prior year for trimester 1). - High school: 82.8% consistent attendance (down from 83.6% the prior year for trimester 1).
Hanson and Sorensen described school practices to identify students at risk, including attendance teams that include administrators, social workers and nurses, and targeted family meetings. A high school example cited engagement with more than 550 students and nearly 230 families to address attendance challenges.
Board members asked whether excused activities (sports, online coursework) are counted as absences (administration said these are excused and not counted as absences in the consistent-attendance metric). Members also requested more granular breakdowns by individual high schools and by class year (freshman, sophomore, etc.) for future trimester reports; administration said that level of detail would be provided in future updates.
Ending: Administration said attendance updates will continue each trimester and that staff will return with additional breakdowns and trend analysis to help guide interventions.
