Germantown appoints Scottie Hendrick to Board of Education seat

The Germantown Board of Mayor and Aldermen on Jan. 27 appointed Scottie Hendrick to fill the unexpired Position 2 seat on the Germantown Board of Education.

Deputy City Administrator Lisa Piefer told the board the seat became vacant after the resignation of Dr. Daniel Chatham and that the city received 14 applications for the opening after the position was posted Dec. 3; 14 applications were received by the Dec. 20 deadline and seven candidates were publicly interviewed on Jan. 6. Piefer said the appointed person will serve until a successor is elected at the next general election in 2026.

The appointment came after Vice Mayor Mary Anne Gibson nominated Hendrick and Alderman Hicks seconded the nomination. Gibson, who presented her reasons for the selection, asked her colleagues to support the appointment: "I humbly ask my fellow aldermen to support the appointment of Scottie Hendrick to fill position 2 on the Germantown Board of Education." The board approved the nomination on a roll-call vote: Salvaggio—yes; Sanders—yes; Gibson—yes; Hicks—yes; Yulicki—yes.

Board members who spoke during the discussion praised the quality of applicants and encouraged those not selected to remain engaged in public service. Deputy City Administrator Lisa Piefer summarized the selection process and said it was conducted in accordance with the city code for filling board vacancies. Several aldermen noted the school district's upcoming projects, including a planned redesign at Houston High School, as reasons for selecting a candidate with experience in large-scale project work and community partnership building.

The newly appointed member will be sworn in by the Germantown Board of Education at a later date. The appointment process and timeline were presented to the public in the board packet; the board confirmed the process by motion and roll call during the Jan. 27 meeting.
