The Missouri House of Representatives paused its business on Jan. 29 for several personal-privilege remarks, moments of silence and member announcements.
Representative (Gentleman) from Lafayette announced the death of Captain Christopher Clevenger of the West Central Missouri Fire Protection District, saying Clevenger “died suddenly Jan. 26” after nearly 15 years of service in Saline and Pettis counties. The Lafayette member said Clevenger is survived by his wife, Jessica; children, Brantley and Reagan; and his parents, Michael and Billy Clevenger, and that the death “is being considered as occurring in the line of duty.” The chamber observed a moment of silence at the speaker’s request.
The Gentleman from Stone delivered a personal-privilege statement announcing that Lisa Poloy Hyde of Stone County, a constituent and mother, died after a rapid cancer diagnosis. The member described Hyde as “a wife, a mother, a patriot, and a friend” and asked the chamber to observe a moment of silence.
Separately, the Gentleman from Saint Charles County informed members that first responders had determined there were no survivors in the collision between a U.S. military helicopter and an American Airlines commuter jet late the previous night. He asked the House to keep the families and service members in their thoughts, noting that authorities may later identify links to Missouri residents.
On other member business, the Lady from St. Louis City reminded members of a prison-nursery open house and ribbon-cutting at Vandalia Correctional Center, a 14-bed unit, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the speaker directed members to a flyer distributed by the legislative liaison for additional details. The Lady from Jackson announced a Go Red for Women day on Monday, Feb. 3, and asked members to wear red; the American Heart Association will offer CPR demonstrations in the Capitol rotunda and members were invited for a photo on the grand staircase at 3:45 p.m. that day. The women legislators’ group also reminded members it is accepting $100 membership dues and auction items.
At the close of business the House rose to observe a final moment of silence for those lost in the Washington, D.C., incident referenced earlier in the session.
