Committee approves printing of RS 32049 to raise Idaho State Bar dues

Senator Todd Lakey, State Senator from District 23, presented RS 32049, a request statute developed with the Idaho State Bar that would increase annual state bar license fees and dues for certain categories of attorneys. Lakey said the bar has not increased dues since 2011 and that RS 32049 proposes increases ranging from $15 to $60 per year depending on membership category. "The state bar is an organization that's funded by its members. It's not, it doesn't utilize any general funds and additional funds are needed to help make sure they do a good job of supervising the attorneys in the state of Idaho," Lakey said.
Senator Foreman moved to send RS 32049 to print; Senator Lenny seconded the motion. The committee approved the motion by voice vote. No roll-call tally is recorded in the committee transcript.
Lakey acknowledged membership sensitivity to fee increases but described the amounts as modest and tied to bar functions. The RS will be printed for a subsequent merit hearing where additional detail can be presented.
