Fairview planners say zoning rewrite aims to shape future development; public review planned

Fairview officials said the city has received a draft rewrite of its zoning regulations and has formed a multi-stakeholder committee to review the document, with additional public review planned before the Board of Commissioners adopts any new code.
City Planner Ethan Greer and staff delivered the draft zoning code from a contract consultant and a committee of planners, developers, a real-estate professional and elected officials will review it. Commissioner Brandon Butler and other planning commissioners are participating on the review committee, officials said.
The rewrite, officials said during a question-and-answer segment, is being drafted from scratch rather than as edits to the old code; it focuses on form and appearance, tree retention, sidewalk and turning-lane expectations and other standards meant to produce more consistent development outcomes.
Officials said the rewrite will go through multiple public-review cycles (including planning-commission hearings and town-hall discussions) before the Board of Commissioners considers adoption. The next town hall on the issue is scheduled for May 29, staff said.
Residents asked how many people are on the review committee and whether there will be opportunities for public feedback; officials said the committee includes staff, a planner, three developers/real-estate practitioners and two elected members, and that the review will include public workshops and Planning Commission hearings.
