A Financial Aid staff member, Financial Aid Counselor at Millersville University, said "Exit counseling is a required financial aid process designed to help you understand your federal student loan obligations and prepare for repayment." The announcement noted the requirement applies when students graduate, transfer schools, withdraw, or drop below half-time enrollment.
The counselor told students exit counseling covers repayment options, how monthly payments are calculated, interest accrual and capitalization, and how to pause payments if needed. "You'll also get tips to manage your debt and steps to prepare for repayment," the counselor said.
Staff outlined what students should have ready: contact information for a closest relative, two U.S.-based references ("they're not responsible for your loans," the counselor said), and details about a current or expected employer. The counselor warned students not to list temporary jobs they do not plan to keep after school when entering employer information.
Students were given three ways to complete exit counseling: schedule a one-on-one session with the financial aid team, attend a group session offered each semester, or complete the counseling online. Staff directed students to the U.S. Department of Education's exit counseling page at studentaid.gov/exit-counseling and described a seven-step process: log in under the correct student type; confirm contact information; review student loan amounts; learn about interest accrual and capitalization; review borrower roles and responsibilities; enter information to compare repayment strategies and consolidation; and review a summary to finish.
The announcement closed by encouraging students to check their Millersville University email for scheduling information and reminders about group sessions, and to complete exit counseling before entering repayment. No dates, deadlines, or formal votes were discussed in the recording.
