Jason Friedman was sworn in as chief of the Grand Forks Police Department during a morning ceremony that included the GFPD honor guard.
The oath was administered by the mayor, who praised former Chief Nelson and Interim Chief Love for their roles in the department's transition. "I think they've done a a great job and Chief Love did a great job bridging that gap, for Mr. Friedman ultimately to be sworn in here as chief," the mayor said.
Friedman, who said he has spent nearly 30 years in law enforcement, told attendees he was "grateful and humbled to become our next chief and join not only the law enforcement family here, but also our community." He thanked first responders, city employees and his family, and singled out his wife Angela for her long-term support: "I would not be standing at this podium today without your support and encouragement. I love you."
The ceremony concluded after Friedman completed the oath and signed the paperwork. The mayor noted final administrative steps before the event ended: "I just have to sign this and then we're good to go."
