A new illuminated monument sign welcoming residents and visitors at the intersection of Main Street and Imperial Highway is now installed in El Segundo after six years of planning and construction.
City Engineer Sheryl Ebert said community feedback emphasized a desire for a sense of place, imagery of El Segundo’s natural habitat, and recognition of the city’s aerospace and technology industries. "Some of the community feedback that we heard was that they wanted a sense of community in the sign. They wanted it to show, nature, El Segundo's natural habitat. They wanted to see their aerospace industry as well as technology into the future," Ebert said. "So the sign's done a really great job of representing all of that feedback. I'm just really excited to be handing this project over to the community to really enjoy, for the years to come."
The recording said the previous welcome sign was retired in 2022 after more than 50 years at the city's northern entrance. A ribbon cutting recently celebrated the completed project; the sign includes illuminated, colorful imagery intended to represent El Segundo's history and character.
