Contractor updates courthouse renovations; commissioners discuss naming and signage for Liberty Lane annex

Clayton Cooper, site superintendent for PNC Incorporated, and assistant superintendent Paris Cornelison reported recent work at the courthouse including roof repairs, installation of downspouts to control water flow, bathroom remodels and foundational pad replacement. Cooper said doorframes were expected to arrive the following week and that work on the east side of the building — including retaining walls and a new wheelchair-lift area — would start soon. "We're currently working downstairs also bathroom remodels," Cooper said, adding the team would "start moving up" the building after completing lower-level work.
At the Liberty Lane facility, Cornelison said crews had finished most demolition, poured columns for load-bearing walls and were preparing to install steel beams; fire-sprinkler work and plumbing trenching were near completion. He said a sanitary sewer line and a new fire hydrant had been added and that roof drains were being installed to alleviate water retention at the site.
Commissioners discussed naming and signage for the Liberty Lane location. County staff said they had asked the Alabama Association of County Commissions (Invest in Alabama Counties) for guidance and were advised that naming the site a county "court annex" would allow the county to apply courthouse access restrictions in law. Jonathan (last name not specified) explained that the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) Miscellaneous Guidelines Manual controls sign size, font and colors and that final sign production would follow ALDOT review and approval. Commissioners directed staff to place a name-approval item on a future agenda so ALDOT-compliant signage can be procured and installed.
