Board approves renumbering and replacement of policies 1000–1040; consent agenda also approved

The Newington Board of Education voted on Jan. 28 to replace the current policy set numbered 1000–1040 with revised language and a new numbering scheme, the board announced during the meeting. The motion to adopt the recommended replacement policies was moved and seconded and passed on a roll‑call vote.

The nut graf: The board unanimously approved the motion on the night’s agenda to replace policies 1000–1040 with updated versions (renumbered to 1000–01/30 in the meeting materials); the action followed review by the policy committee and public discussion. The vote tally recorded on the roll call was seven in favor and none opposed.

Board secretary Debbie called the roll after a motion and second. The roll call recorded the following board members voting “yes”: Mary Beatrice, Britney Carr, John Halloran, Anthony Miele, Timothy Newton, Sam Sharma and Jessica Weaver. The clerk announced: “The motion passes 7.”

Earlier in the meeting the board approved the consent agenda (approval of minutes from Dec. 11, 2024 and Jan. 15, 2025). The clerk reported that the motion to approve the consent agenda passed 6 to 0 on that vote.

The policy action follows a multi‑month review of the district’s policy manual; board members on the policy committee said the updates are primarily language clarifications, inclusivity additions (e.g., references to PTO/PTA/PAC) and reorganized numbering to improve public access. Several policies in the 1200 series (community relations) were reviewed during the same meeting but were scheduled for further review before any vote.

The board did not take other formal votes at that time on the 1200 series policies; those will return to the policy committee for additional refinement.
