Board hears Brandon Valley Middle School addition plan: 10 classrooms, kitchen and locker expansions planned for 2025–26 construction

The Brandon Valley School District 49-2 board heard a design‑phase overview for a Brandon Valley Middle School classroom addition at its regular meeting, including a proposed timeline, classroom counts, facility improvements and financing plans.
"The project will be under construction for the entirety of the 25‑26 school year, and then we will be set and ready to open here in the fall of 2026," Superintendent Larson said, describing the district's expectation for construction timing. Larson told the board the project would add 10 classrooms — eight general classrooms and two science rooms — along with a kitchen expansion, expanded locker rooms, a multipurpose/wrestling room and additional parking.
Larson said financing for the middle school addition is tied to the district's capital outlay planning. The district previously authorized a capital outlay certificate of $34,000,000 for Berkman Valley Elementary School; because bids for that elementary project came in advantageously, the district has an estimated remaining authorized balance of nearly $11,000,000 that Larson said could be applied toward the middle school addition.
Larson also described a planned second phase, funded from $10,000,000 in capital outlay cash savings the district has set aside: $5,000,000 proposed for a multi‑purpose/fine arts space and gymnasium, $2,000,000 for performing arts center upgrades and $3,000,000 for renovations at the activities complex.
On the floor plan, Larson said two classroom wings will be added — one extending east from the southeast corner and another on the northeast corner — and described additional toilet facilities and an east‑side parent drop‑off that would lengthen pick‑up/drop‑off lanes to reduce stacking on Holly Avenue. The kitchen expansion will include additional dry storage, freezer and refrigerator space; Larson said it is the district's intent to keep the kitchen fully operational during construction.
Larson said the project was close to being put out to bid and invited more detailed, micro‑level questions to appropriate administrators as needed.
The presentation was informational only; there was no formal board action on the addition at this meeting.
