Recreation and Parks recognizes coastal-cleanup volunteers and multiple Eagle Scout projects

David Guither (staff member) led a public recognition segment at the Dec. 1 Recreation and Parks Board meeting honoring volunteers and Scouts who assisted parks maintenance this year.
Guither said volunteers participated in International Coastal Cleanup Day at Myrtle Point Park, where a mix of community groups including Friends of Myrtle Point, Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and employees from Booz Allen Hamilton participated in beach and trail cleanup. Lorenzo Fletcher of Booz Allen Hamilton and representatives of Friends of Myrtle Point were invited forward to receive certificates of appreciation.
Guither and staff also recognized several Boy Scout Eagle projects carried out by members of Troop 303 and other troops. One Eagle Scout, Ethan Johnson, described replacing wooden flower‑planter timbers at the Joseph P. Wick playground in Dorsey Park with stone planters, painting playground gates, spreading mulch, painting fire hydrants (six hydrants), and seeding bare ground. Guither said the scouts completed multiple work days and that troop adult leadership has been active and supportive.
The board presented certificates to a long list of volunteers and scout participants, and staff displayed photographs of cleanup and project work on the meeting screen. Guither said the volunteer labor supplemented department staff, particularly after storm damage from Hurricane Irene earlier in the year, and that volunteers were instrumental in clearing trails and debris in several parks.
No board votes were associated with the recognitions; the segment concluded with a group photograph and thanks to volunteers and troop leaders.
