Jessica Hale, Department of Recreation and Parks staff, presented the department’s redesigned logo and a new format for the seasonal program guide at the advisory board meeting on Dec. 17.
Hale said the main logo was updated to a modern design and staff developed multiple versions for use across program areas — for example, gymnastics and aquatics — and for use on apparel and printed materials. The new suite includes white and dark versions intended to work with varied shirt and marketing colors.
The program guide was redesigned from a larger insert-style distribution to an 8.5-by-11 full-color guide. Hale said the department reduced print distribution from about 28,000 copies (which had included newspaper inserts and distribution to all schools) to 9,000 copies distributed to every elementary school, with flyers for middle and private schools and an emphasis on the online version. Hale told the board the change is expected to save slightly more than $1,000 annually; she stated prior printing costs were about $25,000 and the new approach reduces that to roughly $23,000.
Hale said the winter guide will preview summer day camps and that registration for summer camp begins March 1. The department also highlighted dates for the Scott Verity golf tournament on June 7 and an Easter festival on March 30. Hale said the department expanded dance class offerings through a contract with House of Dance in Hollywood and expanded Paralympics programs.
Board members asked about the exact savings and distribution; Hale provided the cost comparison figure and said the department will avoid incurring unnecessary replacement costs by phasing new logos into materials as items come due for replacement. No formal board action was recorded on the logo or printing contract during the meeting.
