Board members report design takeaways after tours of recent Minnesota high schools

Members of the Northfield Public School Board and staff reported on two days of facility tours in January, saying the visits provided practical design examples and helped the planning team identify priorities and tradeoffs for the Northfield High School reconstruction.
The tours included recently built or renovated schools in Owatonna, Waseca, Saint Peter, Rock Ridge (Virginia, MN), Mora and several districts with expanded athletic facilities (New Prague, Mound Westonka, Mounds View, Chisago Lakes). More than 30 participants attended day‑one tours and roughly 20 joined day two, the district said.
Board members and staff said the visits illustrated different approaches to common design goals such as natural light, flexible collaborative spaces and shared athletic facilities. Rock Ridge and Mora drew attention for innovative planning and community investments, while other sites demonstrated renovation approaches or campus models linking elementary and high school spaces.
Superintendent Hillman and planning consultants (Wold Architects and Planners and Sal Bagley noted in the packet) said tour feedback will be compiled and used by the core planning team to develop criteria that will produce initial floor-plan options. The core planning team meets this week, with the first activity subcommittee meeting scheduled for late February, staff said.
Board members who attended described the tours as long but valuable and said the compiled comments from participants will help prioritize design elements for Northfield’s project.
