Waukegan schools announce veterans card drive, immigration-rights resources and parent meetings

Nicholas Alazakis, director of communications for Waukegan Public Schools (Waukegan CUSD 60), said the district will host a Valentine's-for-veterans event at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 1, at the Brookside Campus and highlighted staff training and upcoming meetings to support families.
The event will let attendees create custom Valentine's cards; supplies will be provided and JROTC cadets from Waukegan High School will collect the cards and donate them to the Midwest Veterans Closet in North Chicago for distribution through local veterans organizations. Alazakis said the district is “reiterating some of our commitments to our families,” and encouraged families to attend the Brookside Campus event.
Alazakis said district staff have received training on how to handle situations involving immigration officials and that the district does not collect or share immigration-status information. “We remain committed to ensuring our schools are safe and welcoming spaces for all students regardless of their immigration status,” he said. The district is providing “know your rights” cards and legal toolkits for emergency preparedness and will host a second immigration-rights meeting at Juarez Middle School on Thursday, Feb. 13, with representatives from the North Suburban Legal Aid Clinic; that session will also be streamed live online.
The district also promoted community engagement opportunities for parents. Alazakis said the Black Parent Network will meet virtually via Zoom on Monday, Feb. 10, beginning at 5:30 p.m.; a link to join is posted on the district website.
