Agency of Education reports $1 million underrun in state‑placed students funding for FY25

Sean Cousno, interim chief financial officer for the Agency of Education, told the House Appropriations Committee on Jan. 31 that the agency is proposing a $1 million reduction in its current‑year FY25 budget line for state‑placed students.
Cousno said the agency has historically spent about $14–$15 million on state‑placed students and that this year’s spending is projected to be “a little over 15” million. He told the committee the agency had budgeted conservatively and that a late adjustment reduced the FY25 current‑year estimate from amounts previously shown in the budget language.
Committee members and staff noted the reduction appears in the FY26 budget bill language and that the agency could shift the item back into the budget adjustment if necessary. Cousno said the agency is proposing about $17.2 million for FY26 for the program.
No vote or formal action was taken during the Jan. 31 briefing; committee members accepted the explanation and moved on to other items on the agenda.
