Rich Blankenship, director of parks and recreation, described completed renovations at the Ruffner Sports Complex valued at about $8,600,000 and outlined programming and opening plans.
Blankenship said the complex features three multipurpose fields (with a fourth convertible into two fields using temporary fencing), state-of-the-art concessions, two restroom facilities, two playgrounds and open grass areas intended for flag football and youth activities. He said the city plans a public celebration on March 1 that will include a celebrity employee softball game and the mayor throwing out the first pitch.
He also said youth-sports registrations for baseball, softball and T-ball are open through Feb. 15 and that the park will host tournaments and regular games intended to increase youth participation.
Ending: Blankenship urged residents to register for youth sports and to visit the complex once it opens to see the upgraded facilities.
