Board approves consent agenda, accepts multiple retirements and donations

The Rye City School District Board approved its consent agenda by motion at the Jan. 28 meeting, accepting multiple personnel and operational items including contracts, a donation for a girls’ softball scoreboard, a field trip agreement and several staff retirements.
Board President requested a motion; board member Sean Klotfir moved to approve the consent agenda and Matt Schibenoff seconded the motion. The board chair called the vote and recorded a 7–0 approval to adopt the consent agenda.
Items cited by district staff as included in the consent agenda: an agreement described as improving negotiating power for Ed Law 2-d contracts; a contract with Vision Hotels to support a field trip for high school American Sign Language (ASL) students to Rochester; acceptance of a donation from the Rye Fund for Education, in partnership with the Rye Softball Association, to purchase and install a scoreboard for the girls’ softball field; and the hiring of a new athletic trainer.

- Jeanne Romano, Rye High School physical education teacher and coach, is retiring at the end of June after 36 years in the Rye City School District (39 years in education). The district noted Romano’s long service across grade levels, her coaching roles and leadership in department coordination. In her retirement letter Romano wrote, “Being a Rye Garnet is truly something special.” District athletics director Susan Reed Dulet credited Romano with making those around her better and said the district will “never forget the way she made everyone feel valued and appreciated.”
- Mary Henwood, Rye High School physical education teacher and coach, is retiring at the end of June after 39 years in the district. Henwood coached varsity girls basketball for 25 seasons and held other coaching roles; she told the district, “I was blessed to do what you love and you will never work a day in your life.”
- Michelle Yousai, a special education teacher at Rye Middle School, is retiring at the end of June after 31 years in the district (33 years in teaching). Assistant Superintendent for Pupil Personnel Services Dr. Erin Friedenberg thanked Yousai for patience and commitment to students and families.
- Janine Davey, teaching assistant at Osborne School, will retire March 1 after 17 years with the district. Osborne Principal Angela Garcia described Davey as “an invaluable member of our community” who consistently prioritized student safety and well-being.
Superintendent Dr. Byrne and board members thanked the departing staff and noted personnel and budget items related to the consent agenda will be reflected in upcoming reports. The board moved on to informational items, including calendar discussion and presentations on the IB program and the superintendent search.
