Board agrees to fold Health & Safety topics into Student Achievement committee of the whole and asks policy to update bylaws

Board members discussed a proposal to eliminate the standing Health and Safety committee and to incorporate the committee’s work into the Student Achievement committee of the whole by extending that meeting on an as‑needed basis.

Vice President Bolton and other board members said the Health and Safety topics — including mental health, resource coordination, school resource officers, student conduct and discipline, bullying data, pedestrian and in‑school safety — remain critical and should be covered in committee of the whole meetings or convened as ad‑hoc working groups. "I like extending the committee of the whole largely because I think all of these topics ... seem to be particularly relevant," Vice President Bolton said.

Board Member Lundy (spelled variously in the transcript) said the Health and Safety committee was a carryover from an earlier strategic plan and that the board could sun‑set the committee while asking the committee of the whole to add time for these topics when warranted. Several members emphasized the need to assign someone to coordinate agendas with the superintendent to ensure topics receive meaningful attention.

The board asked the policy committee to draft bylaw edits to reflect elimination of the standing committee and to clarify how the committee of the whole will incorporate health and safety topics and timeline expectations. The policy committee was asked to consider a rewrite of bylaws and return recommendations to the full board for action.
