District trademarks school and district names; board to draft usage policy

District staff told the board Jan. 28 that Chappaqua Central School District and all six school names are now registered trademarks and that the policy committee will draft guidance for permitted use.
Josh (staff) said the district completed the trademark filings in order to require permission before outside parties manufacture apparel or use logos and to provide an avenue to request unauthorized users to cease use. Josh said the policy committee will work to create a flexible policy so community apparel creators are not unduly restricted.
Separately, staff explained a data‑privacy item on the agenda: New York Education Law 2‑d requires strong protections for student data. Because some vendors (Google was specifically mentioned) will sign only a statewide BOCES contract, the district presented adopting Erie 1 BOCES/RIC1 Google data privacy policy so the district can continue using Google services under that statewide instrument for up to five years.
Ending: The board approved routine consent items that included a Google/BOCES data privacy agreement (on the consent agenda) and staff said the policy committee will return with trademark usage language for board consideration.
