Spring ISD students set priorities to bring to Austin: teacher retention, curriculum, enrollment and discipline

Members of Spring ISD's Student Governance Fellowship met in January and identified four top priorities they plan to bring to state legislators: teacher retention and recruitment, curriculum, enrollment and discipline.
District officials said students discussed practical proposals and fundraising ideas, including suggestions to support teachers who spend personal funds on classroom supplies. Staff noted students were tracking education bills and preparing to present their priorities at the Capitol. Natalia Gomez from Raise Your Hand Texas assisted students in facilitating the fellowship session.
Students are scheduled to meet again Feb. 3 to refine talking points. The district said the students plan to travel to Austin in March to speak directly with legislators about the priorities they developed.
Board members praised the students' engagement; one trustee said legislators are often more receptive to hearing directly from students and families than from board members. The board's student governance cohort is continuing preparation and will report back to the full board.
