Fire chief seeks $49,548 to repair damage at Station 12; funds proposed from earlier equipment savings

Carroll County Fire Rescue reported damage at Station 12 after a fire apparatus struck the bay header on Oct. 31, 2024. The department obtained three quotes for structural repairs and garage door removal/repair. Through negotiation the department separated door replacement and secured a lower total amount.
The recommended contractor, Barrett & Associates, submitted a structural repair quote of $47,496; West Georgia Gate & Door provided a quote of $23,100 to remove, repair and reinstall the garage doors. Combining negotiated scopes resulted in a total estimated repair cost of $49,548. The chief recommended selecting Barrett & Associates because its bid included more detailed scope information.
Fire Rescue proposed to fund the repairs from savings remaining in a previously approved equipment appropriation (the department had purchased equipment earlier in the prior fiscal year and reported savings after negotiating with vendors). Commissioners indicated they were comfortable placing the item on the consent agenda for Tuesday night; no formal vote was recorded at the work session.
Commissioners asked whether altering door widths would have prevented the incident; staff said widening doors would have materially increased repair costs and was unnecessary for this repair.
The department also confirmed the recently purchased pumper truck referenced earlier in the financial report was a new vehicle (2022 purchase) and that components and replacement cost context were discussed in that budget presentation.
