The Tunica County Board of Supervisors approved a package of routine administrative and budget measures during its Thursday meeting, including a 2025 amendment to the county—our-year road plan and multiple personnel and finance actions.
Miss Stewart told the board she was "requesting permission from the board, to accept and approve the 2025 amendment to the 4 year road plan." The board approved the amendment by voice vote. Stewart also notified the board that contractors will close the Dundee bridge over Bear Lake Bayou starting Tuesday to perform work on the bridge structure.
The board approved several sheriff's office items presented by a sheriff's office representative, Miss Donnell, including manual payroll checks to correct underpayments for three employees after an automatic one-hour lunch deduction was applied in error. Miss Donnell listed the employees as Christian Tyler Brown, Dennis Hopson and Jamie Lewis and presented the amounts requested for manual payment. She also asked the board to accept a $700 refund check from DeSoto County that was received for a canceled training class, to record a previously unentered $3,150.48 deposit to the inmate account ledger, and to authorize a salary realignment increasing Assistant Chief Jamie Lewis from $34.00 to $34.49 per hour effective Jan. 13, 2025. All of those items were approved by voice vote.
The board approved a transfer of $612,845.70 between the general fund and the infrastructure modernization fund to cover a January 2025 tax payment. Supervisors also approved a board order directing the tax assessor to recalculate 2024 real estate taxes for KPC Apartments and KPC Apartments Phase 2 based on 2023 financial reports, after the assessor's office did not receive timely financial statements.
On personnel and operations, the board approved hiring Melvin McKinney Jr. as a part-time museum assistant at $15 per hour, with the job described as 20 hours per week (up to 80 hours per month). The board also granted North Tunica Fire District permission to hire two full-time and one part-time firefighters to replace departing employees. The board approved an amended cost for a ladder-truck repair for the North Tunica Fire District, increasing the amount from $14,321.36 to $16,720.46 due to unforeseen repairs.
A cremation-related item was approved under Mississippi Code 43-31-29: the board authorized payment of $1,100 to Meredith Knoll Funeral Home for cremation services for Brett Johnson. During discussion, a supervisor noted the family had declined to accept the remains and said the county may need court guidance on disposition; the board did not change the payment approval.
The board also approved routine business items including payroll, the credit card report, the claim docket and travel/training notices (including the sheriff's attendance at a National Sheriffs Association conference in Washington and local training by deputies).
