Sarah Frederick, deputy director at the Recreation Authority of Roseville in Eastpointe (RARE), presented the authority's winter program schedule at the Jan. 7 council meeting, reporting that youth and teen basketball and volleyball registration closed with 423 participants.

Frederick said the Rec Authority is partnering with Live Right Recovery Center on a food drive running through Jan. 31, with a snack-and-craft drop-in event scheduled for Jan. 16 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the rec center. A winter craft class (snowman craft) is scheduled for Jan. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. ($20 for residents, $25 for nonresidents), with registration requested by Jan. 16.

Other events include a cardboard box drive-in movie on Feb. 15, weather-permitted sledding events Feb. 22 (Swindler Park and Huron Park), and an adaptive basketball league for ages 13 and older; Frederick said the adaptive team has seven athletes and the program includes nearby communities. Frederick also noted preschool classes, youth dance, tennis and karate among the coming programs and said the Rec Authority will publish summer day-camp details in February.

Councilmembers and the mayor thanked Frederick for the presentation; questions raised included program fees and scholarship availability. Frederick said youth scholarships are available through the Roseville Optimist Club and that adult classes can be supported by payment plans on a case-by-case basis. She also provided contact information for registration and program questions.
