Baker said radon is “naturally occurring in Colorado” and that about “one out of every two Colorado homes” have tested above the Environmental Protection Agency action level of 4.0 picocuries per liter (pCi/L), according to the information he cited. Baker added that exposure at that level is comparable, in his remarks, to “about 200 chest x‑rays per year or eight cigarettes a day.”
He said virtually all homes can be mitigated and noted that some homeowners may qualify for financial assistance through the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s Low Income Radon Mitigation Assistance program (LIRMA). Arapahoe County Public Health, Baker said, provides education and has free radon test kits available for homeowners and renters; he gave the county‑public‑health phone number as 303‑795‑4584.
