Commission asks fire department to inspect flashing school sign at St. Charles Elementary

Petitioners urged the Traffic Commission to address a malfunctioning flashing school-zone sign at St. Charles Elementary School on Myrtle Street. David Jamieson, a parent at St. Charles, said the flashing sign “doesn't operate properly” and that motorists do not slow until they see the flashing lights.
Commission staff said Superintendent Duran and the deputy superintendent agreed to reexamine the sign location and condition. The commission noted that flashing school-zone signs in some instances are maintained by the fire department’s electrical division. A commissioner said: “They replaced the signs up and off of Woven at the Alta Vista School, and it was in fact, the electrical division of the fire department that replaced those signs.”
The commission voted to send a communication to the fire department asking the electrical division to inspect and, if needed, repair the flashing sign. Commissioners also approved a motion to ask DPW and engineering to evaluate whether relocating the sign to a different position would improve driver visibility and compliance. Both motions were seconded and passed.
No relocation or repair work was scheduled at the meeting; staff said the electrical division would inspect and advise whether repair or relocation is required and whether a permanent move is feasible.
