Council committee backs bump in facilities manager salary to $115,000 to fill vacant post

The committee on ordinance and charter rules voted to advance an order amending Woburn Municipal Code Section 2-180 to increase the base salary for the city’s previously approved Public Works Facilities Manager position from $80,000 to $115,000.
Mayor Concannon and city staff told the committee the position exists in the budget but has not been filled because the prior salary was below market for comparable positions in neighboring communities and not aligned with the Department of Public Works salary structure. Department heads (police, fire, senior center, recreation and DPW representatives) attended the meeting and described burdens from decentralized facility responsibility; several said they needed an administrative lead to manage maintenance, preventive work and capital planning across nearly 50 city locations.
Committee members supported the increase as a first-step compromise while a larger discussion continues about a possible city-wide building feasibility manager and overall reporting structure. Councilors repeatedly said a facilities manager who reports within DPW would help consolidate maintenance work and could produce cost savings through preventative maintenance. The committee voted to approve the order to update the municipal code salary schedule and move the matter forward to the full council.
