ECC approves three new committee members, including Republic Services manager; city commission must confirm

The Environmental Concerns Commission voted to approve three applicants to fill three open committee seats and recommended the slate to the City Commission for confirmation.

At the meeting the commission interviewed three candidates. Mike Thompson introduced himself as general manager of Republic Services for Southwest Michigan and described his background in waste and recycling operations; he said he lives downtown and outlined priorities including education and food waste diversion. After discussion, a motion to approve the three candidates as a slate was made and seconded; the chair called for a show of hands and the motion passed "unanimous" by that count.

Members noted conflict-of-interest concerns and asked applicants to declare conflicts if they arise. The candidate who is a Republic Services manager said he serves on national boards in the waste and recycling association and that he would address any conflict if it occurred. The commission recorded that final membership becomes effective after the City Commission reviews and formally appoints the candidates; members were told the City Commission meeting schedule would likely allow the appointments to appear on the commission agenda before the ECC’s next meeting in February.

No formal roll-call tally was recorded in the ECC minutes from the meeting; the chair reported the show-of-hands vote as unanimous. The commission instructed the new appointees to attend the February meeting in a participatory role even if the City Commission’s appointment had not yet been finalized so they could engage with committee assignments.
