Jackson County Board certifies special election results for Iowa Senate District 35

The Jackson County Board of Supervisors on Thursday certified the results of the Jan. 28 special election for Iowa Senate District 35, approving county and state abstracts that record 1,001 ballots and authorize forwarding those abstracts to the Iowa Secretary of State.
Lisa, county elections staff who led the canvass, told the board 1,001 people voted in the special election for a turnout of about 19 percent. Lisa said candidate Mike Zimmer received 555 votes and Kate Whittington received 446.
The certification motion authorized the board chair to sign the official state and county abstracts and the certificates of election, and authorized Auditor Smith to forward the abstracts to the Iowa Secretary of State. The board approved the motion by voice vote; the chair announced the motion carried.
Board members then moved to adjourn the special meeting. The meeting was brief and focused on the canvass and formal certification; no other substantive agenda items were discussed during the recorded segments.
The certification is an administrative step required to finalize local results and transmit official abstracts to the state office for the record and any further processing required by the Iowa Secretary of State.
